Mass of components and material distribution in lateral flow assay kits

Examples of six different lateral flow tests

Body

This study analysed 21 COVID-19 lateral flow test kits and found plastic content ranging from six grams to almost 40 grams per individual test. With over 2 billion tests produced annually, resulting in 16,000 tonnes of plastic waste, most of which is incinerated or landfilled, the environmental toll is significant – especially in low-resource settings. The findings highlight the substantial plastic waste generated by these single-use tests and underscore the need for manufacturers to adopt more sustainable practices. Recommendations include setting limits on plastic usage and enhancing recycling efforts to mitigate environmental impact.
