Can plastic waste from point-of-care diagnostics be reduced?

Long distance shot of the Diagnostic Discard: the making of a plastic pandemic exhibition

Body

Rapid tests and devices are vital in healthcare but their disposable nature generates vast plastic waste. This essay (part of a series) explores the environmental burden of single-use plastic diagnostic tools used at point-of-care. The authors urge a shift in industry and policy: redesign diagnostics for reuse or biodegradability, invest in sustainable waste systems, and enforce regulations to limit plastic use. By fostering cross-sector collaboration - from manufacturers to policymakers - it is possible to maintain diagnostic effectiveness without sacrificing environmental integrity. A transformative approach is essential for green healthcare diagnostics.
