Bruno Strasser Discusses The Mask on Cliocast

By

In November 2025, Bruno Strasser joined historian Séveric Yersin for an episode of Infoclio’s Cliocast podcast, discussing The Mask: A History of Breathing Bad Air, co-authored with Thomas Schlich. The English-language interview was recorded on 14 November 2025.

The conversation explored the history of respiratory masks and the many forms they have taken, from simple cloth coverings to industrial respirators and gas masks. It considered how people have responded to harmful air—including smoke, dust, vapours and germs—and why masks have repeatedly become objects of both hope and unease.

The interview connects with After the Single Use’s wider interest in the histories of medical technologies and the changing ideas of safety, protection and responsibility that surround them.
